Call me out old fashioned … err … maybe just behind a bit behind the trends, but I’m still a huge fan of mason jars.  And anything homemade with them or in them.  Actually … let’s just call it ‘classic’ taste.  Can the mason jar trend be considered classic yet?  Has it been long enough?

Well … today I’m here with a fun Mason Jar gift idea.  I originally set out to make an end-of-the-year Teacher Appreciation Gift for my son’s teachers, but then got a bit carried away.  Because they’re just so darn cute.

You see … with a different tag, it also totally works as an adorable ‘Thank You’ gift for someone:

Or a perfect housewarming gift:

Really … you could use this idea for almost any occasion.  It’s a plant.  It’s in a cute mason jar.  It’s homemade (and thus thoughtful).  And it’s unique.

Ready to make one? Here’s how …

Supplies

  • Wide Mouth Quart size Mason Jar
  • Wooden tags (I purchased these at Michael’s, but most craft stores sell these)
  • Scrapbook / colorful paper
  • Labels and scissors
  • Mod Podge and foam brush
  • Twine, ribbon, or similar to tie on tag
  • Drill with small drill bit
  • Plant (I used this Epipremnum plant)
  • Sand
  • Soil

Instructions

  1. Grab your wooden tags and drill a small hole in each to allow you to hang tag onto jar.

Next, adhere your backing paper to tags.  Simply trace the shape onto your scrapbook paper and cut out.  Then … apply a layer of mod lodge to wooden tag, stick paper in place, then apply a thin layer of mod podge over the top, completely covering the paper and all edges.  Note:  there’s no need to wait for the first coat to dry before applying to top coat.

  • Next, cut out the gift label (again … you can download them HERE):

  • Apply another layer of mod podge over scrapbook paper, stick label in place, then apply another layer on top of label, securing it in place.

  • While mod podge is drying, transfer your plant to mason jar.  First, fill jar halfway with sand.  Next, place plant and any additional soil needed into top half:

  • Grab twine or ribbon, and secure tag onto jar as shown:

  • That’s it!  Simple, inexpensive, and thoughtful … perfect combo for any gift!
